Westminster Village - Being a Volunteer
|
|
All you have to bring with you is a sleeping bag and pillow, warm long johns, earplugs, warm clothes and, most importantly, a good sense of humour.
We will supply you with food, tea, coffee, bread pudding and cake. The Westminster Village is an alcohol free area. We give you a high visibility jacket which must be worn while on the site and on the embankment.
We have portacabins to sleep in, toilets and showers.
The neighbours, Big Ben and the emergency services can be very noisy, but you are so tired by the time you get to bed you don’t even notice it.
There is a large marquee which houses the kitchen and feeding area; this has tables, chairs and heaters and also the paddlers changing rooms.
We set up the ‘village’ early Saturday morning and take it down again lunch time on Monday.
The area of the village is policed by Lambeth police, Lambeth community police, St. Thomas’ security men and many security cctv, so sleep-walking is not a good idea.
Parking: If you are a volunteer, you can park in the St. Thomas’ car park for free, just bring me your car-park entry ticket, and I will give you a free pass.
We are a mixed crowd of all ages, some have been doing this for many years, some even make the journey from Germany, but we desperately need more helpers, to cook, sell merchandise, act as marshalls, both on the embankment and in the village. We have no age limit; pensioners, teenagers, togs particularly welcome, it is fun, you do not have to know anything about water and canoes.
If you can give us some time please contact me Yvonne Riley by email [email protected]. |
